Things to Do in Bangkok: Top 10 Places to visit

Before we dive into the top 10 things to do in Bangkok, here is my two cents of travel advice. There was a time I wouldn’t even consider spending money on travel, completely engrossed in my work. When I finally took the plunge into traveling, my primary guides were Instagram-worthy posts and captivating YouTube videos showing others’ highlights. But over time, I learned something important: the key to fulfilling travel lies in understanding what you, as an individual, truly want from the experience.

Is it ticking items off a bucket list and curating the perfect Instagram posts? Or is it about genuinely immersing yourself in a new culture, cherishing authentic experiences, and finding personal fulfillment? Whether you’re craving a relaxing resort retreat or researching deeply for an adventurous trip, what matters most is tailoring your journey to your desires.

With that mindset, I curated my itinerary for my first trip to Bangkok—a city brimming with vibrant culture, history, and modern attractions. Here are my top recommendations, along with a few extras, so you can craft your perfect Bangkok adventure.

1. Rajadamnern Stadium for Muay Thai Boxing

One of the most culturally ingrained experiences in Thailand is Muay Thai boxing, and there’s no better place to witness it than at the iconic Rajadamnern Stadium . You can book your tickets online directly through the stadium’s website, which I highly recommend to secure your seat and streamline your itinerary. Tickets range in price, so there’s an option for every budget.

What to Expect

The electrifying energy of the crowd and the skillful artistry of the fighters make Muay Thai an unforgettable spectacle. At Rajadamnern Stadium, expect an electrifying Muay Thai experience with traditional rituals like the Wai Khru Ram Muay, live Sarama music, and thrilling matches showcasing the “Art of Eight Limbs.” The card typically features 7–10 fights, building in intensity.

The vibrant atmosphere is amplified by passionate local fans, live betting, and the stadium’s rich history. Choose ringside seats for an up-close view or mingle with locals in upper tiers for authenticity. Snacks and drinks are available, and the stadium exudes Thai cultural heritage. It’s an unforgettable night of martial arts and tradition.

Chatuchak Market Bangkok

What to Expect

Navigating the vast market can be overwhelming, so it’s helpful to have a printed map to find different sections easily. Bargaining is essential, and whether an item feels cheap depends on where you’re from. As an Indian, I didn’t find the prices particularly low, but I focused on buying unique items that are hard to find back home. The market is also a great place to pick up affordable swimsuits. Among the highlights, the street food stalls stood out—mango sticky rice and coconut ice cream were definitely the cherry on top of my shopping adventure!

Tip: Decide when you want to shop in your itinerary so you don’t have to travel with additional luggage. It’s best to schedule your visit either early in your trip or after you’ve checked into your accommodation. Consider leaving heavy luggage at your hotel or using a luggage storage service to make the experience more enjoyable.

What to Expect

Chinatown comes alive in the evenings, with neon-lit streets and a bustling atmosphere. The market opens in the afternoon and stays active into the night, with food stalls reaching their peak in the evening. If you’re arriving via the hop-on, hop-off tours, be aware that scammers often target tourists near the ferry dock, claiming the market is closed and offering to take you elsewhere—don’t fall for it! You’ll need to walk toward Chinatown to reach the market, and the street food here is a real treat, adding to the infectious energy of the area. If you love experimenting with new food, this should rank on top of the things to do in Bangkok.

10. Khao San Road

In Bangkok, we stayed at the Bed Station Hostel—an experience in itself. Located on Khao San Road, this vibrant area is known for budget accommodations, quirky shops, and bustling nightlife. Even if you’re not staying here, it’s worth a visit for the lively atmosphere and delicious street food.

What to Expect

The vibe here is carefree and energetic, with street performers, pop-up bars, and constant activity. I tried the Tom Yum Goong (spicy shrimp soup), fresh fruit juice, and spring rolls, all of which were pretty good and perfect for the atmosphere. Plus, there are plenty of places to shop nearby, adding even more excitement to the experience.

Bangkok’s appeal lies in its diversity—from the adrenaline rush of Muay Thai to the serene beauty of Ayutthaya, riverside dining at Asiatique, and the glamour of a cabaret show.
